Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation that has been supporting families worldwide for over 140 years. Started by our founder Mary Sumner in 1876 in her local parish, we have grown into an international charity with over 4 million members in 84 countries.
As a Christian membership charity, we demonstrate our faith in action. This happens as we work towards stopping poverty, stopping inequality and stopping injustice. Our members work at grassroots level around the world. They bring hope and practical support to millions of people every year through parenting, literacy and community development programmes.
As a registered charity we have campaigned at local, national and international levels to bring about real change for family life, women’s and girls’ rights, and the protection of children.
York Diocese covers urban areas of Middlesbrough, York, Hull, Selby, Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby as well as the rural areas between the river Tees and the Humber. there are 59 branches with 900 members.
Members are involved in parenting groups, prison work, refugee groups and local churches, they give caravan holidays to those in need of a break, they are actively involved in the 16 days of activism against gender based violence within their own locations and they run 2 retreats a year for members. Most branches help with projects within their own church and produce craft items for those in need eg hospitals, care homes etc.
The branches meet usually once a month but vary in the time of day and venues. There are 2 diocesan meetings a year where all members can get together and learn from each other what initiatives are working well and get advice on those needing more input.
